Grumpy Book Grrrl

a writer and reader

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is popular books that lived up to the hype. So, let’s just get right on down to it. That’s the way we jam around here.

Shelly’s Picks

I just posted this one in my recent blog about the Facebook book covers thing, but this one truly lived up to the hype for me. It’s a favorite that I have read more than once.

I’ve only read the first two in this series, but I loved them both! All I can say is: RHYS! Am I right?

In an effort to not simply add the same books I already posted in the previously-mentioned blog (I’m looking at you Red Rising and Angelfall), I’m nominating Vicious by V.E. Schwab. I LOVED this book, and it had me thinking of Professor X and Magneto from X-Men.

I’m starting to notice a red theme going on here and that is purely coincidence. This book has mixed reviews, but it’s a favorite of mine. I have yet to read the final book in the trilogy, but the first two were great, in my view.

Seriously, the red covers thing is not my fault. A lot of good books have red covers, I guess! 😛 This is one of my favorite Young Adult dystopian/sci-fi series. I can’t wait for book three to release.

I loved this book so much more than I thought I would (and only read it about a year ago for the first time). The rest of the series? Hit and miss. Not as good as this one.

I found this trilogy to be solid all the way through. I love science fiction and dystopias and this one was a blend of both. I recall all the characters being pretty authentic too.

One of my favorites, this really is a fantastic and original zombie novel. The movie was excellent as well – and the prequel was peachy.

I’m going to cheat for the last two and list series that live up to the hype. Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews and the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. I seriously love both of these so very much and find them to be full of some of the best fantasy writing out there.

(The final and tenth Kate Daniels book, Magic Triumphs, releases August 28, 2018.)

I will forever be biased when it comes to this series. I do think the first five were the best, but I still like all the others, and High Voltage (the most recent one) is tied with Shadowfever for me as the best. They both made me cry and feel/think really deep thoughts.

Kira’s Picks

#10written inred

I was surprised by how much I liked this. Unfortunately I haven’t liked any of the other books in the series as much.

#9poison study

This one definitely lived up to the hype! Good characters and good world building.

#8Grave mercy

This book blew me away! It’s about assassin (sort of) nuns. It’s YA but very mature. The fourth book in the series will be released next year.

#7the bird and the sword

This was so much better than I thought it would be. It’s an original PNR with rich world building.

#6 a promise of fire

This book has quite a few PNR tropes in it but it was one hell of a fun read. I’ve read it a few times and still like it just as much as the first time.

#5strange the dreamer

I love this book! The beginning was slow but it gets so good after. I’m not much of a highlighter when reading, but I did a lot of it in this.

I love dark books, and this was an extremely dark and twisted take on Alice in Wonderland.

#3gone girl

The characters are atrocious, but it was full of demented twists and turns.

#2a monster calls

This is one of my favorite books. It hit me in the feels like nothing else I’ve ever read. Don’t judge this by the movie. The book was 10 times better.

The Kate Daniels series. I never would have read this if I hadn’t heard good things about it. I struggled through parts of the first one and wanted to DNF it. Others encouraged me to continue and it was definitely the right choice. This series is phenomenal. I’ve read the last book. It was perfect.

Which books are on your lists? Which ones did we forget?

I agree about so many of them! Especially ACOTAR, Vicious and Strange the Dreamer. I also added a couple of books to my tbr so thank you for that! Great post ❤️
