I’ve decided that I like funny superhero movies. I like adventure and I don’t like tragedies. I know that most superhero origins contain the death of someone very important to them, but I don’t want my superheroes to die and I don’t want them all angsty. I want humor, not drama. That being said, I realized my favorite superhero movies are the ones that are the most fun. (This means you won’t be seeing any DC movies included here, although I did love Wonder Woman.)
Thor: Ragnarok just may be my all-time favorite. This movie is EXACTLY what I want in a superhero movie. It’s so damn funny! It has kick-ass women. Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson are DIVINE. It was directed by the guy from What We Do in the Shadows:
Of course it was going to be good. I love funny Thor. And Loki is ALWAYS a plus. He is one of my favorite villains for sure. Total win.
Guardians of the Galaxy. I bet you can’t guess why I like this one so much. Yep, that’s right. It’s funny. Irreverent. Goofy. Over the top. I love it. The Avengers needs to take a hint and stop being so dang serious. (I am getting sick of how serious The Avengers are. Needs more funny.)
Deadpool. Again, guess why I like it so much? Plus, the first movie had this guy in it:
Ed Skrein. I’ll watch him reading the ingredients off a cereal box – anytime. And it’s got that other guy, Ryan Reynolds, in it too. 😉
Spider-man Homecoming was a solid movie. Funny and fresh. You think oh no, not another Spider-man reboot, but this works big time. Fantastic casting and writing and I am excited for the next one. Also love the casting of MJ (whose name in the movie is Michelle, not Mary Jane). Zendaya is fantastic!
Okay, okay. I know Doctor Strange isn’t exactly a comedy, but I just love Benedict Cumberbatch, and the character Doctor Strange is such a bad-ass with awesome abilities. Plus, Tilda Swinton.
Captain America: Civil War. Cap is one of the most serious Marvel superheroes there is, but I was totally Team Cap for this movie. Spider-man and Antman had the best supporting roles (again, comedy relief). Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes is the best. And I love Scarlet Witch.
I’m gonna throw Ant-man in here because I liked it a lot! Better than the Iron Man movies!* 😛 Paul Rudd makes the perfect super insect.
Last but not least, this film is supposedly not technically in the MCU, but takes place in the same world as Spider-man Homecoming.
Is anyone else as excited about this as I am? TOM-freaking-HARDY as Venom?! And he signed for THREE movies?! I have been wanting to see more movies focused on villains and here we go. Hardy’s personal trainer:
“What the world is going to see is one of the darkest, most powerful supervillains that Marvel has ever created. It’s going to be carnage.” (Source).
Okay, that’s it for now. Do you agree with my choices or my preference for more funny and less drama in superhero movies?
* BTW, I do like the Iron Man movies, but a little Iron Man goes a long way, and his arrogance and general assholery gets on my nerves in large doses.
