Grumpy Book Grrrl

a writer and reader

Release date: October 1, 2018. ★★★★★ It has been awhile since I picked up a book I didn’t want to put down. This was a page-turner. It’s set in the near-future and is about a drought-to-end-the-world-droughts in Southern California. It’s been years and people can’t water their lawns or fill their swimming pools up. But one day, the taps run dry, and it’s suddenly life or death.

We don’t know what is going on around the rest of the country because TV stations, radios, computers, and phones are soon done for. It’s a fairly realistic scenario, if you ask me, and is a scary, but timely reminder of how fragile society really is.

There are four POVs. One is a teenage girl named Alyssa who ends up with her 10-year-old brother separated from their parents. Kelton was raised by “preppers.” Jacqui is a very snarky 19 and has been on her own for years. Henry is another teenager the group meets in their search for water and a safe place during the crisis.

If you are looking for something to tide you over until The Toll, here you go. It’s got similar pacing and feel to it. I LOVE end of the world, apocalyptic books, and this was fantastic!

I actually liked that there was no romance to get in the way of the story. I liked all the characters and the drama was strictly due to plot and not manufactured filler.

I originally was mailed this as an ARC from the publisher and then I moved, transferred to a new work location, and was taking my last accounting class. It got put to the side, unfortunately. However, if I would have known how superb this was, I would have found a way to make it work!

Highly recommended!

Thank you Simon & Schuster for providing the book. I sincerely appreciate it and apologize for being so late in reviewing it! 😦
